Chicago issues sportsbook licences as alliance challenges city tax
Chicago issued licences to major sportsbook operators before 1 January, allowing their services to remain available as 2026 began, according to a report. The Sports Betting Alliance withdrew its request for a temporary restraining order but is continuing its court challenge to the city’s licensing requirements and proposed 10.25% tax. The alliance argues that Chicago lacks authority under Illinois law to impose them.
The court case could determine whether operators face Chicago licensing requirements and a city tax on online betting revenue.
