Chicago City Council rejects sweepstakes machine ban in 33-15 vote

Regulation

Chicago City Council voted 33-15 against a proposal to prohibit sweepstakes machines in the city. The proposal’s sponsor argued a ban could accelerate the introduction of licensed video gambling terminals, while opponents questioned the financial return; a city commissioner said the department lacked authority and resources to remove the machines directly.

The vote leaves sweepstakes machines operating while Chicago continues to authorise licensed video gambling terminals.
