Malaysia warns Meta over illegal gambling adverts and takedown requests
Malaysia’s communications minister Fahmi Fadzil warned Facebook that legal proceedings could follow if it failed to cooperate with regulators over illegal gambling adverts and fraudulent content. Authorities reported 271,472 takedown requests from 1 January to 23 May 2026, with more than 91% linked to scams and illegal gambling organisations; Fadzil said a coordination committee would be proposed to the cabinet.
The warning and proposed coordination body could increase platform enforcement obligations for gambling-related content in Malaysia.
