Brazil’s AGU pursues eight betting companies over customer refunds

Enforcement & compliance

Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (AGU) said it will take legal action against eight betting companies that have not provided account-balance data needed to refund customers. The government reported R$159m in outstanding balances as of 10 October, covering about 22.5 million bettors and 70.5 million accounts; financial institutions were expected to complete refunds by 14 October. Authorities also submitted 16,627 unauthorised betting websites for blocking between 25 September and 9 October.

The action puts pressure on operators to provide customer data needed to process refunds after their online operations were banned.
