Brazil’s AGU seeks at least R$1bn from 17 betting operators in health lawsuit
Brazil’s Advocacia-Geral da União (AGU) filed a civil action against 17 online betting operators in the Federal Court of Pernambuco on 28 September 2026, seeking compensation for alleged health harms. It seeks at least R$1bn for collective moral damages, reimbursement of public health treatment costs to be calculated during the case, and double repayment of bets by people diagnosed with gambling disorder. The AGU says the companies account for about 80% of Brazil’s fixed-odds betting market.
The claim could expose operators to substantial financial liability and repayment obligations if the court grants the requests.
