Malaysia requires identity checks for social media advertisers
Malaysia introduced mandatory identity verification for individuals and businesses buying sponsored advertisements on major social media platforms, with the rules taking effect on Monday. The requirement applies to licensed platforms with more than 8 million users in Malaysia and forms part of the Risk Mitigation Code under the Online Safety Act 2025; the deputy communications minister said it aims to address anonymous promotions of scams and illegal gambling.
Advertisers on covered platforms must verify identities, as Malaysia targets anonymous promotions of illegal gambling and scams.
