Lula announces Brazilian betting ban with sites due to close on 6 October

Regulation

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced a provisional measure on 25 September prohibiting online sports betting and casinos, according to a media report. The measure immediately bars platforms from accepting new bets, requires sites and apps to close from 6 October, and gives users until 5 October to withdraw balances. Congress must review the measure within 60 days, with a possible 60-day extension; a separate bill proposing prison terms of up to six years would require approval before taking effect.

Licensed operators face an immediate halt to new bets and a deadline to close their Brazilian sites and apps.
