Italian bill proposes 2% levy on sports bets to fund football
A bill under discussion in the Senate’s Culture Commission proposes a contribution to the FIGC equal to 2% of stakes on football-related sports bets placed in Italy, from 1 January 2027. Senator Marcheschi said the levy would provide the main part of an estimated €245m in annual funding; at least half would support youth development and 30% would fund gambling-harm prevention and social projects.
If enacted, the proposed levy would change concessionaires’ costs and direct part of sports-betting revenue to football and prevention programmes.
