High Court hears Betfair duty-of-care case over player’s death
A High Court trial concerning Betfair’s duty of care to a UK customer who died by suicide is due to begin on 4 June and last about three weeks. The customer’s family alleges Betfair failed to intervene despite signs of gambling harm; a coroner’s inquest in 2023 found his gambling had worsened before his death. The UK Gambling Commission decided not to penalise Betfair in 2025, a decision the family has also challenged in court.
The trial could determine whether gambling operators owe a duty of care to customers experiencing gambling problems.
