BNLData questions government betting balance sheet over unexplained R$1bn drop

Regulation · SectorWire deskSource published

Summary

BNLData's FactCheck reported that a Secom release on 10 October cut refundable betting balances from about R$1.2bn to R$159m in five days, attributing the fall only to data updates by companies. The report said the release did not explain whether the money was withdrawn, whether the earlier figure was wrong or whether it was double-counted, and omitted recovered amounts, blocked accounts and penalties. BNLData said it filed freedom-of-information requests with the Finance Ministry, Justice Ministry and Central Bank.

Why it matters

The unexplained R$1bn fall and missing recovery figures leave operators and investors without a reliable measure of the betting market's balance-sheet clean-up.
