Alessandro Vieira proposes 15% levy on online bets in Brazil

Regulation

Senator Alessandro Vieira rejected betting companies’ request for a proposed tax on their gross revenue, citing concern that operators could manipulate the calculation base. His Senate report instead proposes a 15% Cide-Bets contribution on online wagers, with estimated annual revenue of up to R$30bn to fund public security actions. The bill passed the Senate and returned to the Chamber of Deputies for review.

The proposal would tax online wagers rather than operators’ gross revenue, affecting the sector’s tax exposure if enacted.
