YouTube opens homepage Masthead ads to certified online casino operators

Deals & M&A · SectorWire deskSource published 2 min read

It was reported that certified online casinos, together with other online gambling advertisers, will be able to buy homepage Masthead ads on YouTube starting Wednesday, Oct. 21. Sports betting brands were the only ones able to use this placement up to now. The shift stems from a revision of Google's Gambling and Games Advertising Policy, which now lets online gambling operators qualify next to sports betting brands.

Because the Masthead ranks among the platform's most visible ad slots, it appeals to advertisers eager to reach big audiences in a single push. SCCG reported that Google has left open the question of whether the option works the same way in every market. Eligibility may differ widely depending on the country, the gambling product and local licensing rules, so operators have to build campaigns that satisfy those rules before the first ads go live.

Search Engine Land reported that certification under Google's Gambling and Games policy is required, along with compliance with every applicable legal, geographic and age restriction. Advertisers must additionally satisfy Google's requirements in each jurisdiction they target and secure the relevant Google Ads certification. Whether approval is granted hinges on the gambling category, local regulations and licensing rules.

Not every advertiser is covered by the expansion. Companies that promote online gambling but are not subject to mandatory state or national gambling registration stay shut out. SCCG added that strict disclosure requirements apply and that advertisers must show sufficient player protections. Search Engine Land described the update as something other than a blanket approval for gambling advertising on YouTube.

Permission to use the placement comes with continuing obligations. According to SCCG, Google refuses new certification for accounts carrying too many gambling law violations, and repeat offenders can have existing permissions revoked. Once revoked, an operator can no longer advertise gambling products. YouTube states that it stays firmly opposed to unlicensed gambling and keeps children away from gambling content.

Comparable restrictions cover crypto, NFTs and skins gambling, in which players wager virtual items from video games, while sweepstakes casinos carry age restrictions. Slot streamers and gambling vloggers are popular on YouTube, posting gameplay, strategy guides and breakdowns of game features. SCCG said their growth helps explain the platform's preference for regulating gambling content over banning it, and the outlet added that regular policy updates allow YouTube to track the gambling sector while keeping permitted adult-oriented content available.
