A multidisciplinary study of Turkey's online gambling sector, focused on problem gambling, identified a structural system linked to its increase. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Yeşilay Danışmanlık Merkezi (YEDAM) centre and was based on analysis of data for the period from 2020 to April 2025, according to the report.
The study identified three key factors: always-available access to digital platforms, so-called frictionless payments, meaning systems that allow transactions to be carried out quickly and immediately with fewer steps, and platform design aimed at encouraging sustained participation. The report found that the average age of people seeking treatment was 34.7, with the highest incidence among young adults aged 26-35 and in the intermediate stage of working life, aged 36-45. First contact with gambling often came through sports betting, but a shift towards digital casino-style games has recently been recorded.
According to the report, targeted promotions, loyalty systems and bonuses, and automatic play functions contributed to increasing the risk of problem gambling. A comparative analysis with other regulatory frameworks, such as those of the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States, indicated that there is no single solution applicable to all contexts.
The study produced recommendations on the need for stricter financial checks, including through the use of artificial intelligence technologies, as well as better coordination with institutions and law enforcement. The report also supported the application of restrictions already adopted internationally, such as deposit limits and better use of self-exclusion tools. It further called for an urgent update of rules on digital advertising.
