Study says illegal betting costs Brazil R$10bn a year in tax revenue
A study on Brazil’s betting market estimates that illegal operators account for 51% of activity and cause about R$10 billion in annual tax losses. Criminal lawyer Pierpaolo Bottini said illegal platforms operate without public authorisation and argued for stronger cooperation with digital platforms and payment providers; the study also warns that higher taxes on wager volume could drive bettors towards illegal sites.
The estimates and tax concerns bear on enforcement priorities and the effects of proposed betting taxes.
