Spielbank Norderney will cease operations at the Conversationshaus at the end of 29 October 2026. The future use of the rooms at the Kurplatz remains open, the report said.
Dismantling is to begin after the closure and should be completed by the end of February 2027, when the contract with Staatsbad Norderney also ends, according to the report. The closure follows plans to relocate the site to Stuhr near Bremen. The Merkur Group took over the ten Lower Saxony casinos on 1 July 2025, and the relocation plans for Norderney existed before that takeover.
An interests balancing agreement and a social plan were agreed with the works council for employees, the report said. These include offers to move to other Lower Saxony casino locations and arrangements for ending employment. According to the operator, it is not yet clear how many employees will accept a move.
Staatsbad put the rooms out to tender in the summer for a new gastronomy concept, according to the report. The plans provide for a dining room of up to 280 square metres, a planned terrace of around 100 square metres and further ancillary areas. A year-round operator suited to the historic Conversationshaus is sought, with the 2027 season named as the target for opening. No decision on the subsequent use is known so far. According to a report by Norderneyer Morgen on 15 October, several applications have been submitted. Staatsbad is also examining its own use of the rooms, as its administration currently works in confined space conditions.
