Spain's Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, acting through the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), has introduced a single default deposit limit applying across all online gambling operators where a player holds an account, the ministry announced on 21 October 2026. The default limits are €700 a day, €1,750 a week and €3,300 over a four-week period. The system is in a testing phase and is fully available to users, with definitive entry into force set for 26 March 2027, according to the ministry.
The new system replaces the previous arrangement under which limits were set independently by each operator rather than per person, which the ministry said allowed deposits above the initial limits if activity was spread across several platforms. Users may change or remove the default limits voluntarily through a specific procedure that includes information on gambling-related risks. Changes and removals take effect after three working days, and a limit may be increased only once every three months. The DGOJ will manage the system through a technical tool that coordinates the information needed to verify compliance in real time, which the ministry said avoids unnecessary exchanges of information between operators and improves protection of players' personal data. The measure is additional and complementary to the existing per-operator deposit limits.
The ministry said the measure will particularly benefit players active with several operators, a group it estimates represents about one third of active online gambling users in Spain.
The DGOJ has also launched a Player Portal, a free digital tool available to all citizens whether or not they hold a gambling account, accessed through the Cl@ve identification system. The portal centralises information on a user's online gambling activity across authorised operators in Spain, including deposits, stakes, winnings and losses, activity history and aggregate statistics. It also lets users check which gambling accounts are linked to their identity, which the ministry said helps detect possible impersonation at authorised operators, set customisable alerts on spending levels and activity, manage and modify the joint deposit limits, check the status of requests and confirm their application by operators, and generate and download electronic activity certificates for complete annual periods.
