South African parliamentary reply reports 3,135 gambling licences issued in 2024/2025
A written reply to Rise Mzansi MP Makashule Gana reported that provincial gambling boards issued 3,135 licences in South Africa in the 2024/2025 financial year. Gauteng issued 753, KwaZulu-Natal 596 and the Western Cape 549. A separate reply from the Police Minister reported 32,938 illegal gambling cases over five financial years, including 36 online cases, with 39 arrests and 22 convictions.
The figures give regulators and lawmakers a basis to assess licensing levels and enforcement activity across provinces.
