South Africa’s NGB warns of illegal gambling scams and fake betting apps
South Africa’s National Gambling Board warned the public on 1 June about illegal gambling platforms and fake betting applications targeting consumers ahead of the 2026 Soccer World Cup. Acting chief executive Lungile Dukwana said scammers use social media, messaging services and unofficial apps, and may demand extra payments when users try to withdraw purported winnings. The NGB urged consumers to verify provincial licences and avoid upfront withdrawal fees.
Licensed operators should expect scam apps and platforms to impersonate brands and target South African consumers.
