The Social Market Foundation (SMF) proposed treating gambling harm as a public health issue in the UK, including a national database, according to the report. It also called for gambling questions in standard patient assessments and legally required local public health strategies.
The proposals could require health services and councils to expand gambling-harm screening, treatment and reporting.

SLICKS has proposed a National Gambling Harm Council to represent people affected by gambling harm in the Netherlands. The organisation wants the body established as an independent advisory and participation body, with legal provisions requiring the Kansspelautoriteit and ministry to consult it on policy. SLICKS also seeks long-term independent funding and says its paper may be discussed at a parliamentary committee debate on 3 September.
Reportedly, Brazilian deputy Paulo Teixeira submitted DLP 930/2026 to propose a nationwide plebiscite on banning fixed-odds betting and online gambling. Congressional approval would allow the electoral court to schedule the vote. Congress would then adopt legislation reflecting the result ratified by the TSE.
Australia’s government proposed a national register allowing people to opt out of gambling advertising, Communications Minister Anika Wells said in Parliament on 17 August 2026. Wells introduced legislation for a levy on sports betting companies to fund the register, while other proposed measures include limits on television advertising and restrictions on inducements and influencer marketing.
