Pernambuco federal court gives AGU 30 days to detail betting lawsuit

Regulation

A federal judge in Pernambuco ordered the Union to clarify its civil action against 17 fixed-odds betting operators, giving it 30 days to explain how licensed operators allegedly caused costs to Brazil’s public health system. The AGU seeks reimbursement for health expenditure linked to betting over the past five years and future costs, at least R$1bn in collective moral damages, and double repayment of bets by people diagnosed with gambling disorder. The requested injunction has not been decided.

The court requires the government to specify its evidence and method for allocating alleged health costs among operators.
