New Jersey councilman pleads guilty in gambling-linked campaign funding case
Former Prospect Park councilman Anand Shah pleaded guilty in Morris County Superior Court on 28 August to racketeering, money laundering and official misconduct, according to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Prosecutors said Shah admitted that people who owed him money from illegal gambling made campaign contributions in exchange for debt forgiveness. They will recommend a 10-year prison term, with sentencing scheduled for 4 December.
The plea documents how illegal gambling proceeds and debts were used to fund a political campaign in New Jersey.
