A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering consumer affairs and player protection in gaming has been signed by the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), according to the MGA. The document creates a formal structure for the authorities to work together, communicate and share relevant information, in line with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
The MoU commits the MGA and MCCAA to handling consumer issues, complaints and disputes that overlap with both bodies' areas of responsibility in a more joined-up way. It also makes the routes for cooperation clearer, which the agreement says will assist each authority in determining the right course of action and in sending consumers to the body best placed to help them.
MGA Chief Executive Officer Charles Mizzi said effective player protection depends on authorities working together and sharing expertise so that consumers do not fall between their respective remits. "This agreement strengthens our ability to do just that, reinforcing our commitment to a regulatory environment where player interests remain firmly at the forefront," Mizzi said.
Carmen Ciantar, Executive Chairperson of the MCCAA, described consumer protection as the core of the authority's mission. According to Ciantar, the deal puts an existing productive working relationship with the MGA on a formal footing and gives the authorities a defined structure for tackling gaming-sector consumer issues together.
Ciantar and MGA CEO Charles Mizzi put their signatures to the MoU. In the MGA's account, the signing advances collaboration between the MGA and MCCAA and underlines the joint pledge to protect consumers and players.
“Effective player protection requires more than strong regulatory frameworks. It also depends on authorities working together, sharing expertise and ensuring that consumers do not fall through the gaps between their respective remits.”
