Malaysian High Court rejects Resorts World Sentosa’s RM26m gambling-debt claim

Regulation

Malaysia’s High Court in Ipoh rejected a bankruptcy petition by Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd seeking to recover an alleged gambling debt of about RM26 million, reportedly equivalent to $6.6 million. The court held that the gambling-related obligation was unenforceable under Malaysian law, despite an earlier Singapore judgment registered in Malaysia, and declined to award costs against the operator.

The ruling limits the recovery options available to operators seeking to enforce gambling debts in Malaysia using foreign judgments.
