Ipoh High Court sets aside bankruptcy order over Resorts World gambling debt

Regulation

Malaysia’s Ipoh High Court set aside bankruptcy proceedings against Lee Fook Khuen over a S$5.930 million gambling debt owed to Resorts World at Sentosa, according to the reported judgment. Judge Moses Susayan ruled that gambling-related credit remains unenforceable in Malaysia, even when the debt was incurred lawfully elsewhere, and said registration of the foreign judgment did not prevent the court from examining the debt’s basis.

The ruling prevents the use of bankruptcy proceedings to enforce gambling debts in Malaysia, including debts incurred abroad.
