Louisiana lawmakers propose racketeering changes for gambling offences

Regulation

Rep. Bryan Fontenot introduced House Bill 53 before Louisiana’s 2026 legislative session, proposing to add specified gambling violations to the state’s racketeering law. A racketeering conviction could carry a fine of up to $1 million and a prison term of up to 50 years; the proposal does not create a new ban on sweepstakes gaming.

The proposal could expose sweepstakes operators and connected networks to racketeering prosecutions.
