Italian senator proposes 2% sports betting contribution from 2027
A bill deposited in Italy’s Senate by Paolo Mercheschi proposes a 2% contribution on sports betting turnover, both retail and online, from 1 January 2027. The proposal would allocate the proceeds to youth sport and facilities, gambling-harm prevention, women’s football and amateur football schools; its technical report estimates €230m annually, funded by an equivalent reduction in the existing betting tax take.
The proposal would redirect betting tax revenue among sports and prevention programmes without changing the state’s overall receipts.
