Enforcement & compliance

The Government of India said it blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling websites, bringing the total number shut down to more than 7,800. Officials said enforcement under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act targets operators, advertisers, promoters and financial backers, not players. The law, which took effect on 1 October 2025, prohibits real-money gaming, betting and gambling nationwide while allowing esports and social games without wagering, subject to guidelines.

Operators and related businesses face enforcement under a nationwide prohibition on real-money gaming and betting.
