Federal Court fines former Star executives A$1.1m and disqualifies them

Enforcement & compliance

Australia’s Federal Court fined former Star Entertainment chief executive Matt Bekier A$700,000 and former general counsel Paula Martin A$400,000, according to ASIC. The court disqualified Bekier for six years and Martin for seven years, and ordered both to pay 45% of ASIC’s legal costs; the penalties follow a March ruling that they breached duties to Star.

The penalties clarify the personal consequences for executives found to have breached duties over casino risk controls.
