EU court upholds national powers to restrict online gambling
The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that member states retain broad powers to regulate gambling, including restricting or prohibiting online services on public-interest grounds. The court said operators must comply with each country’s rules and that a licence in one member state does not confer automatic access to others. The European Casino Association welcomed the ruling.
Operators cannot rely on a gambling licence from one EU member state for automatic access to another’s market.
