Spain's gambling regulator, the DGOJ, took part in the Gaming in Spain Conference 2026 in Madrid, an annual meeting of professionals and representatives of the regulated online gambling sector. The conference examined regulatory challenges and market developments, including rules governing the sector, consumer protection measures, new products such as prediction markets, the challenges posed by illegal gambling and possible forms of cooperation to counter it.
DGOJ director general Mikel Arana spoke in the conference's main session, reviewing approved rules and regulatory initiatives in progress. He presented a summary of the impact analysis of Real Decreto 958/2020 of 3 November 2020, which governs commercial communications relating to gambling activities, and said some contents of the report on the decree's impact would be presented publicly in the coming weeks.
Justo Sancho, director of the DGOJ's safe gambling control division, took part in a round table on the implementation of a single deposit limit across operators. The discussion focused on the system approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers on 23 June 2026, which introduces for the first time an overall limit on deposits made by a person with the different online gambling operators where they hold an account. The system, managed by the DGOJ, sits alongside the previous mechanism under which the financial limit was set separately by each operator. According to the source, the aim is to strengthen player protection and reduce the risk of problem gambling behaviour.
It was reported that the DGOJ described its participation in the conference as a reaffirmation of its commitment to an updated regulatory framework able to respond to the sector's evolution and new market challenges, promoting a more transparent and safe online gambling environment.
