Caixa weighs planned Brazilian betting platform amid government opposition

Deals & M&A

Caixa president Carlos Vieira was due to discuss the bank’s planned betting platform with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as the project faced opposition from Lula and ministers. Caixa planned to announce the platform in 2025 and begin operations the following year, with Playtech as its partner; the project targeted R$2.5 billion in revenue in 2026. The report also reports that the TCU identified R$3.7 billion in transfers from Bolsa Família beneficiary households to betting sites in January 2025.

Government opposition leaves uncertain the public bank’s planned betting platform, which was to launch with Playtech as partner.
