Brazilian Série A clubs discuss suspending league over betting ban

Regulation

Leaders of some Brazilian top-flight clubs are discussing suspending the Campeonato Brasileiro to pressure the federal government to reconsider its betting ban, according to reports. The discussions followed the cancellation of a government meeting after a possible club boycott emerged; clubs are also seeking a transition period and say a proposed low-interest credit line is insufficient. Betting companies provided about R$1.03 billion in sponsorship to Série A clubs in 2025, compared with R$618 million in 2024.

A suspension or extended transition could affect clubs’ finances and their existing betting sponsorship arrangements.
