Brazil Senate approves proposed 15% tax on online betting deposits
Brazil’s Senate approved a proposal for a 15% tax on online gambling deposits as part of the Legal Framework to Combat Organised Crime; the measure still requires approval by the Chamber of Deputies. ANJL and IBJR criticised the proposal, arguing it could drive users towards unlicensed platforms. IBJR cited an estimate that 51% of platforms operate illegally and said they transact R$78bn annually.
If enacted, the deposit tax would change the cost of betting with licensed operators in Brazil.
