French police are reportedly investigating suspicious bets on Polymarket linked to the latest Ballon d’Or, placed from twelve accounts. The accounts were allegedly created by the same person between 1 and 20 October, just three days after the jury closed voting.
Every one of the accounts is said to have put its money on a single scenario: the finishing order of the top five, namely Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, Rodri and Lionel Messi. According to the report, the wagers came to over 264 thousand euros in total. The gain was put at close to 200 thousand dollars.
The suspicious bets were reportedly discovered by a French media outlet. France Football, which organised the ceremony, had been warned before the final ranking was made official. After the evening at the London Palladium Theatre, it began internal checks and also contacted the French police department that deals with gambling.
