Brazil blocks 2.8 million social-benefit recipients from betting platforms

Regulation

Brazil’s Ministry of Finance blocked 2.8 million Bolsa Família and BPC recipients who already had accounts from accessing online betting platforms, following a Supreme Federal Court order, according to the report. The ministry says this represents 10.4% of beneficiaries of the programmes; operators must check their user databases every two weeks. The restriction applies to all 27 million beneficiaries, but only existing account holders had access removed.

Operators must check users against the social-benefit database and prevent eligible recipients from accessing their platforms.

ANJL said it sent a letter on Monday 5 October to the National Secretariat for Digital Rights (Sedigi), the National Secretariat for Public Security (Senasp) and the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) requesting reconsideration and urgent clarification of the measure, and that it had received no response.
