A Buenos Aires court approved a plea agreement sentencing the operator of an unauthorised betting venue to three years in prison, the city prosecutor’s gambling unit said. The sentence is conditional and includes conduct rules; authorities said the venue had 25 computer stations and accepted bets from ARS 5,000.
Buenos Aires’ Provincial Lottery and Casinos Institute said it had filed complaints against two illegal sites that used Stake’s branding as an entry screen. The regulator said users were redirected to illegal betting platforms and that it had requested the domains be blocked; it listed seven authorised online betting platforms in the province.
The Buenos Aires Province Legislature passed a law regulating mobile phone and screen use in primary and secondary schools. The bill, introduced by provincial lawmaker Martín Rozas, covers students aged six to 17 and requires schools to educate pupils on screen-time risks and illegal online betting. Rozas said the measure gives adolescents a safer space within educational institutions.
Argentina's casino administration and services union AMS has questioned the IPLyC's estimate that 80% of online gambling in Buenos Aires province is illegal, its general secretary Roberto Páez told Extra Radio 102.1. Páez said the union's figures are far from the official data but gave no alternative numbers, and called for a specialised prosecutor's office and worker involvement in the regulatory debate. IPLyC president Gonzalo Atanasof told provincial legislators the illegal market is worth about US$3.6bn.
Reportedly, Universidad Austral and SICPA organised an international meeting in Buenos Aires on illegal online betting. LOTBA and specialist prosecutors discussed platform blocking, investigations, training and reparation agreements. Participants also examined prevention measures and protections for minors.
