Analysts assess Churchill Downs, Boyd Gaming and gaming-sector prospects

Deals & M&A2 min read

In brief
  • Jefferies' David Katz estimated Churchill Downs' Visa Kentucky Derby sponsorship at $3m to $8m.
  • Truist Securities' Barry Jonas expected limited third-quarter beats, naming Penn Entertainment, Red Rock Resorts and Genius Sports.

Analysts issued notes on Churchill Downs, Boyd Gaming and wider gaming-sector prospects dated 20, 23 and 25 October, according to a roundup of recent analyst coverage. Jefferies analyst David Katz addressed Churchill Downs on 25 October, Texas Capital Securities analyst David Bain examined Boyd Gaming on 23 October, and Truist Securities analyst Barry Jonas discussed the sector on 20 October.

Katz put the value of Churchill Downs' announced Visa sponsorship of the Kentucky Derby at roughly $3m to $8m, adding that sponsorship engagement would bring broader benefits. In his view the arrangement drew a favourable read because the event wants more top-tier sponsorship partners. Turning to the company's announced regional asset sale process, he said attention centred on whether management would provide an update in that week's earnings release. He judged a meaningful update improbable, and argued that any share-price softness on the back of it would be unjustified and represented an opportunity to buy.

After Boyd Gaming posted third-quarter EBITDA in line with expectations, Bain trimmed his 2027 estimate for the company's Las Vegas Locals EBITDA by 2%, a cut fully offset by a 1% lift to his Midwest and South forecasts. Although the Midwest and South segment now supplies more EBITDA, he argued that sentiment toward the stock is generally set by how Las Vegas Locals performs. The lower Locals numbers, he wrote, reflect a cautious stance following a harsh summer seasonal pattern, and he saw no meaningful shift in demand fundamentals or in new competitive forces within the segment.

Jonas noted that the Standard & Poor had gained 12% so far in the year, yet consumer-facing companies, gaming above all, had fallen out of favour with investors. He pointed to regional fundamentals, the resilience of locals markets and Digital B2B visibility as areas of strength, while cautioning that the Las Vegas Strip and Macau still face macro headwinds and that digital carries lingering uncertainty over prediction markets. Few third-quarter beats should be expected, in his view, with Penn Entertainment, Red Rock Resorts and Genius Sports the most likely candidates. Attention would also shift to the fourth quarter, he added, where signs of stabilisation, some of them already appearing in his Las Vegas Strip room survey, might support a partial recovery, and further M&A or take-private talks could do the same.

“We model 4Q26E company-wide EBITDA to be flat year-over-year following five sequential quarters of negative EBITDA growth.”
