Alberta iGaming Corporation reports CA$122.1m revenue in first three months

Regulation · SectorWire deskSource published 2 min readUpdated Published

Alberta's regulated iGaming market generated CA$122.1m in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue in its first three months of operation, according to a market performance report from Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC). The report covers the period from 13 July, when the market opened, to 30 September.

According to AiGC, non-adjusted gross gaming revenue reached CA$22.2m in July, CA$43.3m in August and CA$56.6m in September. Handle for the three-month period totalled CA$2.89bn.

Alberta's market launched in July with 15 licensed iGaming operators, a figure that had climbed to 24 by the close of September. By 24 October, the count of operator licences issued by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) stood at 42. Because some operators run more than one site, the AGLC website shows 52 iGaming sites live in the province. The total climbed sharply in the run-up to 13 October, the date the province's deadline for unregulated sites to enter the regulated space came into force.

Casino took the biggest share of September's NAGGR at 75.6%. Sports betting came next with 19.5%, while live casino accounted for 4.9%. The month saw 388,585 active player accounts, a figure that does not represent unique players because one person may hold accounts with several operators. Each active player account brought in an average of $146 in revenue during September.

Dan Keene, AiGC chief executive, said regulation matters and that approved operators are held to high standards of accountability, with revenue staying in the province to fund programmes and services. He also said early results indicate that Albertans value the oversight and accountability of a regulated market, and that AiGC hopes to continue educating Albertans about the risks of illegal offshore sites and to move them onto regulated platforms where they have rights and recourse.
