Victorian coroner examines operators' response to bettor's gambling activity

Regulation

An inquest in Victoria is examining whether betting operators took adequate steps to protect Kyle Hudson, who died by suicide in 2021, according to a report. Hudson wagered AUD 895,733 between turning 18 and his death, while his net losses were AUD 47,000; Sportsbet said he triggered behavioural alerts 37 times and that it sent responsible gambling materials. Counsel assisting the coroner argued the materials were generic.

The inquest is scrutinising operators' customer-protection responses and the support provided after behavioural alerts.
