University of Sheffield study links World Cup adverts to 22-33% more bets

Regulation

University of Sheffield researchers found that UK gamblers placed 22-33% more wagers while watching Qatar 2022 World Cup matches on ITV, which carried gambling adverts, than on ad-free BBC broadcasts. The study involved 392 male gamblers aged 18 to 45; the Betting and Gaming Council disputed the findings’ implications and said licensed operators’ advertising had declined by 1.7% year on year since 2021.

The findings may inform UK decisions on television gambling advertising during live football.

The council also cited more than 600 betting shops closed or set to close since the previous year’s budget and said over 11,000 online and retail jobs had been lost or put at risk. Its chief executive, Grainne Hurst, criticised the tax increase.

The BGC said the increase would put almost 9,000 jobs at risk and leave almost 1,000 betting shops and casinos facing closure or serious risk of closure, according to estimates by EY cited by the council.
