Bristol study finds 15,571 gambling messages during football season opener

Regulation

A University of Bristol study recorded 15,571 gambling advertising messages during the opening round of the football season, 10.5% fewer than in previous years. Researchers said the voluntary ban on betting-company shirt-front sponsorships did not amount to successful self-regulation, as advertising shifted to other placements; 72% of messages appeared on pitch-side boards. The study also found that 93% of identified digital gambling marketing was not clearly labelled as advertising.

Operators and regulators can use the findings to assess how the voluntary shirt-sponsorship ban affected gambling advertising exposure.
