UK government consults on ban on illegal gambling sponsorships
The UK government has opened an eight-week consultation on a proposal to prohibit sports advertising and sponsorship by unauthorised gambling companies. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport said the proposed restrictions would mainly cover advertising inside stadiums, with online gambling advertising requiring separate legislation. The government envisages the measure taking effect in August 2027, although existing agreements could continue under stated conditions.
Unauthorised operators and sports partners may need to change sponsorship arrangements if the proposal becomes law.
