Study finds apparent GDPR breaches on 86% of UK gambling sites

Regulation

A Swansea University research centre examined 624 licensed British gambling websites and found that 86% appeared to have committed at least one GDPR breach, according to the study. Researchers reported that 24% lacked a tracking opt-out and two-thirds collected data before consent; the ICO said it was monitoring compliance and would take action where necessary.

Operators may need to review cookie consent and tracking practices against the reported compliance concerns.

Over the opening weekend of the 2026/27 campaign, the researchers logged 15,571 gambling-related messages, amounting to five hours and 16 minutes of combined exposure.
