South Korea Supreme Court upholds prison sentence in online gambling data case
South Korea’s Supreme Court rejected the appeal of a man convicted of operating an illegal online gambling site and misusing personal data, upholding his one-year prison sentence. The court ruled that using unlawfully obtained personal information for business purposes still falls under the Personal Information Protection Act; the case involved records belonging to 796 people.
The ruling confirms that operators may be treated as data processors when they use unlawfully obtained personal information.
