Lula backs legislation to ban online gambling in Brazil
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called for legislation to prohibit online gambling in a national broadcast on 8 March, prompting opposition from regulated-market representatives. ANJL president Plínio Lemos Jorge argued that restrictions should target illegal gambling, while the association’s legal consultant Bernardo Freire warned that a ban could affect the regulated sector.
A prohibition could change the operating framework for Brazil’s regulated online betting sector.
