IBJR argues Brazil should retain regulated betting market
The Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR) issued a statement in Brazil opposing calls by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to close betting companies, arguing regulation is the more effective way to protect society. The association cited estimates that illegal betting accounts for about 51% of the sector and R$40bn in annual activity, and said regulated platforms paid R$9.95bn in federal taxes in 2025.
The position sets out the betting sector’s arguments on market closure, enforcement against illegal operators and taxation in Brazil.
