Ghana’s digital VAT system raises questions over online betting costs

Regulation

Ghana’s real-time VAT system for eligible digital services began on 15 October, and the Ghana Revenue Authority said it is intended to collect existing taxes rather than introduce new ones. MP Gideon Boako questioned whether online betting users could face higher costs, while the system’s guidance does not specify how every deposit, stake or wager will be treated.

Unclear VAT treatment may affect online betting costs for Ghanaian users and operators.
