La Gabonaise des Jeux (GDJ), Gabon's public gaming operator, has opened its operations and its online platform, gdjbet.com, the company said. The operator set out its online gambling products at a ceremony in Libreville on 22 October. Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault, Interior Minister Edgar Moukoumbi, government officials, representatives of foreign organisations, local authorities and stakeholders from the economy and civil society attended the inauguration, according to the report.
Moukoumbi attributed the state's takeover of the gambling sector to insufficient clarity and transparency. He called on GDJ's leadership to carry out its responsibilities with ambition, innovation and accountability. According to him, the operator aims to generate wealth for the country, build trust and give the public a new way of looking at games of chance. Its online platform, gdjbet.com, covers horse racing alongside casino games, scratch cards, virtual games, lotteries and sports betting.
GDJ director general Romeo Nguema stated that the company's operations would follow current legislation and the responsibilities of the relevant authorities. He addressed sector partners and operators, saying: "we propose a relationship based on clear rules and respect for each party’s commitments." Responsible gaming was also stressed by the company. Under the applicable rules, age and access limits will determine who may take part in its games, and the company says it is committed to curbing excessive gambling and teaching players about the risks involved.
GDJ presents its online platform as a key part of its gaming offering, and the launch marks the start of its operational activities. The government has presented the step as part of its efforts to strengthen the administration of gambling operations in Gabon and to address issues about transparency.
