EU AMLR imposes direct AML duties on gambling operators from July 2027

Regulation · SectorWire deskSource published

Summary

The EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation 2024/1624 will apply directly in all 27 member states from 10 July 2027. It sets a uniform EU definition of gambling services and requires customer due diligence when a player stakes or collects winnings of €2,000 or more, in a single transaction or linked transactions. Member states may exempt low-risk services such as state-run lotteries after a national risk assessment.

Why it matters

Gambling operators across the EU must align customer checks and risk controls with directly binding EU rules before July 2027.
