Erdoğan renews opposition to online betting in Turkey

Regulation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticised online betting at a public event, describing its potential harm as comparable to or greater than terrorism. The report linked renewed enforcement concerns to Betsson’s preliminary fourth-quarter revenue of €304m, down from €307m a year earlier, and said the company’s shares fell nearly 8% during the first hour of trading on 19 January.

Operators linked to Turkey face heightened enforcement concerns, while Betsson’s reported revenue and share-price movements show potential investor exposure.

The agreements’ future depends on legal definitions and the Brazilian Congress’s decision.
